Both the public and private school divisions are teaming up to come up with a strategy to deal with paddling in the community.
Paddling is a form of hazing that takes place across the country each year. Grade 10 students who are new to schools, are “welcomed” to high school life with whacks on the backside from a paddle wielded by senior students.
Paddles can be handmade, or as Brooks Composite High School principal Grant Jensen says, a modified goalie stick. Most of the offenses are not taking place during school hours or on school property, rather in the community or often at late night bush parties.

The 193 runners who took part in the Dinosaur Park Pump It Up! run raised $3,200 for the Brooks Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit.
“That’s fantastic!” said Cathy Falls, R.N. at the rehab unit. The $3,200 wasn’t the only money raised either, she said.
“We raised $350 at the BBQ.”
While the larger portion of money will go towards a piece of equipment, the smaller portion will be used to buy incidentals that will be used by the unit at Lakeside Leisure Centre.

The Newell Further Education Council is pleased to honour Kathy Bulger for 20 years of dedicated professionalism in the field of literacy in the County of Newell.
Kathy’s passion for literacy began when she obtained her teaching degree from the University of Calgary. Working in Calgary and then Bassano as a elementary school teacher, she taught primarily grade two.  As her family grew, she chose to stay home and continued her teaching career as a substitute teacher.
