Investigation ordered into AgeCare facilities
Minister of Health Fred Horne is taking allegations about Brooks’ AgeCare facilities seriously. “The minister ordered the investigation immediately,” said Bart Johnson, Horne’s press secretary. Last Wednesday a group of residents publicized concerns which were followed by questions about the facilities by the Wildrose Party led by Brooks-Strathmore MLA Jason Hale. During the introduction of guests at the Legislature, Hale said families have expressed their concerns since 2011 through elected officials and the Protection For Persons In Care.

Raising alpacas in Alberta
They jokingly call their house a shack and refer to their acreage as “spartan” but there is nothing simple about the Pedersens passion for the alpacas in their backyard. Pete and Monica Pedersen have been raising alpacas at the Pedersen Place near Tilley since 2001. Their dive into the alpaca industry began when people started suggesting they buy horses and cows. “With 17 acres of land we didn’t have the capacity for big animals like that,” Pedersen said. “So I jokingly said, ‘well ostrich or emu or something like that maybe.’” Around that time a neighbour graduated from vet school. She had a llama herd and hoped to specialize in camelids: llamas, alpacas, and other mammals of the camel family. Pedersen read about it in the paper and an idea took root in his mind. “So I was at work one day. It was kind of quiet with not too much going on and I punched ‘alpaca’ into the search engine and started browsing a few websites,” he said.

Bandits undefeated in RBC Cup play
Brooks Bandits hope to improve their record to 3-0 at the RBC Cup Tuesday when they meet the host Summerside Western Capitals. The two teams will meet Tuesday evening. For the Bandits, it will be their third round-robin game of the tournament. The Bandits got off to a great start this past weekend with a 7-1 opening game victory over the Truro Bearcats Saturday afternoon. They then bounced the second ranked Minnesota Wilderness 6-3 Sunday afternoon.
