Fire rips through fiveplex
Fifteen people are homeless after a fire ripped through a five unit apartment complex at Princess Place at the north end of Brooks on Friday. Three families of four and three men who share an apartment lost everything they owned. Other renters who were forced to leave their apartments returned over the weekend. The fire broke out just after 1:30 p.m. Friday in Unit 32 and quickly spread to the adjoining units. Within minutes of the call, county fire chief Keith Martin arrived on scene and found one apartment fully engulfed.

New coach pleased with effort of team
Grasslands Strikers boys soccer team are enjoying a good season of competition in the Medicine Hat High School Soccer League under new coach Jennilynne Fedor. While Fedor brings plenty of playing experience to the table, this is her first venture into coaching. When Fedor moved to Brooks earlier this year, she was looking to play in a ladies league but found none existed. “I wanted to be involved in soccer somehow and so the physical education coach passed on a name for me to contact,” said the Brooks Composite High art teacher.

Family thankful to Canada and Ronald McDonald House
Boris Sevillano is a proud, grateful man who is thankful to Canada and Ronald McDonald House for taking care of him and his family during a time of crisis. Sevillano arrived in Brooks from El Salvador in November 2006 as a Temporary Foreign Worker. In May 2010 his wife, Silvia and their 10-year-old daughter Marcela arrived in Canada and the family was reunited. In June 2011 Silvia was taken to Medicine Hat when she began to experience complications with her pregnancy.
