Fire consumes grassy area east of the city
The Tilley and Brooks fire crews had their hands full on Friday afternoon when two grass fires erupted along Highway 1. The first occurred at about 3 p.m. when a boat trailer lost a wheel one kilometer east of Tilley. “By the time the driver stopped there were sparks flying and grass fires ensued,” said Brooks fire chief Kevin Swanson.

Canada Day Celebrations!
Brooks’ celebration of Canada’s 148th birthday, the venues and the fireworks display were such a hit, the city’s Facebook page was inundated with comments less than an hour after the events ended. Instead of changing venues three times for different activities as in previous years, the events were in walking distance between the Brooks & District Museum and Duke of Sutherland Park with the fireworks display immediately north of the park beside Ward Pond.

Weekend results from 40th annual Jenner rodeo
Cool weather forced spectators to bring out jackets for all the action during Sunday’s 40th annual Jenner rodeo. Scandia’s Zane Kubik had the only qualified bull ride (63 points) to win the purse and buckle donated by Franklin Tire and Animal Medical Centre South. Australia’s Jack Frances won the purse and buckle donated by the Patricia Hotel and UFA/Brooks Motor Products for his lone qualified ride in saddle bronc (58 points).
